Civilian Response to Active Shooter/Attack Events

 

Avoid Avoid    Evacuate if Possible

  • Identify the location(s) of the threat.
  • Assess your surroundings and plan an escape route.
  • Evacuate quickly using available exits (doors, stairs, windows, etc.).
  • Leave all personal belongings behind
  • Continue moving until you reach a safe location

 

Deny Deny   Hide and Secure Your Position

  • Prevent the attacker from accessing your location.
  • Lock and/or barricade doors to your hiding place.
  • Turn off lights and close blinds or curtains.
  • Silence all mobile devices and remain quiet.
  • Stay alert and reassess your situation for opportunities to evacuate.

        

Defend  Defend TAKE Action as a Last Resort

  • If confronted, defend yourself and fight for your life.
  • Identify and use available objects as improvised weapons.
  • Act quickly with decisive and aggressive force.
  • Continue until the threat is neutralized.
